Directions - Guy Ritchie - Directors Research

Guy Ritchie

Guy Ritchie is an English Director, Screenwriter and film producer. Ritchie is known for his hardman style and iconic gangster films. He is mostly known for films such as Snatch, Revolver, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking barrels and more recently, The Gentlemen.

When starting of in his directing career Ritchie worked closely with Matthew Vaughn who was often his producer. They worked together on Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels after Ritchie reached out to Hard Rock Cafe owner Peter Morton who is Vaughn's Uncle.

Ritchie has directed films, music videos and high budgeted adverts. Ritchie also directed Sherlock Holmes and its Sequel that had box office figures of over 545 million.

Ritchie has written and directed all his movies apart from the Sherlock Holmes series which was written by Kieran and Michele Mulroney. I think it's important to understand the style a director uses to show you that this is their movie. With Ritchie I think he has many styles he coveys through directing, his fast paced fighting scenes and jump cuts are only a few.

Ritchie is also known for his titles, in films like Snatch and Sherlock they have titles that tell you the characters name. I really think this adds to the film because it introduces you to the character straight away. It's normally always a moving image and then the title sequence. The music is always fast paced and sets the tone for him films.

Another style Ritchie has is his chase scenes. In many of his movies he has chase scenes that are tracked by the camera, this is his signature camera work and features in most of his films. He will have a fast paced chase or fighting scene which is then put in slow motion with a fast paced song. I really think this works as it constantly keeps the audience on there toes. It keeps the momentum going for the film.

After researching Ritchie, I now have an understanding of his directing style and can see how popular his work is, within the scene I have chosen from Rocketman, I would really like to take inspiration from his close ups and focus on the characters. Although my adaptation is emotional and not an action packed scene, I do think it's important I convey the same personal attachment Ritchie manages to do with his characters. I will achieve this by holding shots and having close ups of characters.
