25 Word Challenge

02 October 2019

As we have now received our brief for our very first module, we used today to get our creative juices and ideas flowing ready to prepare us for our own ideas and script writing. Simon set us the task in pairs, of creating 3, 25 worded pitches based on a newspaper articles we were supplied with.

The first challenge set was to create a 25 worded pitch based around 'A Big Budget Film Featuring a Hollywood Star'. As me and Kerry scanned through our Newspaper article we came across a story which featured a young Lady opening up about her finances Dad thinking her families bloodline was 'Mad', this caused him to stop the wedding between the lady and her finance, breaking her heart.

Based on the newspaper article we decided to make this into a drama. Our title for the pitch was 'MAD BLOOD' and our pitch was as follows:

MAD BLOOD  ==

'A young Lady called Anne Cook, played by Joey King loses her finances love through his fathers disapproval but he doesn't expect her mad bloody revenge.'

Our feedback given by Simon was that featuring the characters name was irrelevant. As this is a pitch which needs to be enticing and exciting the characters name is not relevant unless it is a known name which could help the sell of your idea. For example: Sherlock Holmes.

The second caption we were given was 'British Comedy Series for Late Night Channel 4'. As I'm aware that Channel 4 after a certain time can be crude, dark and comedic, I suggested we used the news article that featured a 74 year old woman who has advised she gets more Men at this age then ever. Our pitch was as follows.

FINE WINE

'A single Grandmother may have a glamorous exterior, however; her sexual life restarts as a dating app leads her numerous Toyboys and hotel rooms'.

I really found this one out of the three the most relatable and easy to write, this may be because this is something I would be interest in watching or making myself. Simon agreed this would be suitable for Channel 4 and appreciated the idea.

Our final caption given by Simon was 'Low Budget Film, Set In a Council Estate'. We decided to go with a news article based on a heroic police officer who had returned back to work after being attacked by a man with a machete. This inspired our following pitch.

BEARING SCARS

'An undercover police officer is on the hunt to find his attacker who left him for dead. The only clue is the postcode'.

I feel this is the one we struggled with the most, I felt it was hard to create a pitch with a shorter time of only 7 minutes to come up with this. I also felt this was not an exciting pitch and was predictable considering the caption for the setting.

I really enjoyed this task and it has given me a starting point within this module. By now thinking about ideas, pitches and the excitement or lack of attached to each story line, I hope I can grasp a concept for my own idea and get it right.

Short film ‘soft’.

Today we also watched the short feature film ‘soft’. This was a brilliant piece and very gripping. Simon also gave us the task of creating a 25 word pitch for the feature film which I have created below.

‘A man is tested by neighbourhood bullies who have hurt his son and approached his house. The pressure of the situation takes it toll.’

  1. This is a really good pitch, Katie. I think "approached their home" would be better, as "home" is a more evocative word than house. other than that, it works well. Good stuff!
