Directions - Development
Script and Initial Ideas
Below is my script, although I have had to make some changes, the dialogue and scene are to remain roughly the same. The script was taken from a website that provides real movie scripts once the films have been released. I've chosen this piece of work because I think it really shows the change in the characters situation after realising the power of 'your song' and has a real dramatic and powerful tension.
As I have realised from researching directors such as Guy Ritchie, it really is important for visual of the scene to be there and at the forefront of the drama. For example, in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking barrels the set of the scene and the directions of the actor is what engages you, especially when they're fighting in the club office at the end of the movie. The first part of this production was for me to make sure I felt as a director this was in the script for me to also create. Although this is not an action film like Guy Ritchies, it was an emotional scene and needed to have the same impact on the audience, emotion and feeling.
What has changed to the script and why?
As I mentioned above in regards to the script, there have been some changes. In this instance I've decided not to use Fred as a character, as a director personally, I feel it takes away from the scene. The scene is about how Elton is being moaned at by his mum for not pulling his weight and pursuing music when he is not making any money. After he sings your song on the piano everyone in the room know's it's going to be a hit and I think by having Fred in the scene it takes away from the emotion between the three characters involved, Fred, Elton and Sheila.
This also means the line is now 'Two grown men' instead of 'Three' although this makes this now less factual about Elton's life as he did have a stepdad at this point, I feel for me as the director this is a way of showing also how Elton wasn't surrounded by love by the lack of people in the scene.
How do I visualise the production?
As the production will be set in the 70's, it is really important as a director to ensure you can tell this just by setting the scene, I want to ensure I have props and colour to create a 70's home setting. As I've seen by my research for films like 'Blinded by the light' and the original 'Rocketman' without the props and setting of the era the story is being told in, it would be completely unbelievable.
I also want to ensure my Cast is similar to the original and pursues Elton in real life and also his family. The film is factual and needs to be realistic. Below is pictures of the Actors and Actresses I have confirmed to be in my production and the real life people.
I plan on holding shots throughout the scene, I feel it is really important to show the emotion from each character and the impact the discovery of 'your song' really had on Eltons career, it was the song that made him a lot of money. As the director of this piece I feel holding the shots that extra few seconds longer shows raw emotion. I want the piece to be slow with fewer shots to capture the emotion; however, I do not want it to be boring, so I need to make sure I research other directors and learn what works to create drama and tension. Although, I do believe that holding shots and showing each characters reaction is the start of building that tension and sharing the story.
